Tests find only marijuana in face-chewer's system

MIAMI (AP) ? Lab tests detected only marijuana in the system of a Florida man shot while chewing on another man's face, the medical examiner said Wednesday, ruling out other street drugs including the components typically found in the stimulants known as "bath salts."

There has been much speculation about what drugs, if any, would lead to the bizarre behavior that authorities said Rudy Eugene exhibited before and during the gruesome attack that left the other man horribly disfigured. A Miami police union official had suggested that Eugene, who was shot and killed by an officer, was probably under the influence of bath salts.

The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner said in a news release that the toxicology detected marijuana, but it didn't find any other street drugs, alcohol or prescription drugs. Eugene also tested negative for adulterants commonly mixed with street drugs.

The department ruled out the most common components found in so-called bath salts, which mimic the effects of cocaine or methamphetamine and have been associated with bizarre crimes in recent months. An outside forensic toxicology lab, which took a second look at the results, also confirmed the absence of bath salts, synthetic marijuana and LSD.

Messages left with the medical examiner's office for comment were not immediately returned.

The Drug Enforcement Administration last year temporarily outlawed the possession and sale of three synthetic stimulants sometimes packaged as "bath salts." Several states have also moved to ban the drugs, often sold on the Internet and in head shops and other retail outlets. The bans don't affect the kinds of bath salts added to tubs for their fragrance and cosmetic benefits.

An expert on toxicology testing said that marijuana alone wasn't likely to cause behavior as strange as Eugene's.

"The problem today is that there is an almost an infinite number of chemical substances out there that can trigger unusual behavior," said Dr. Bruce Goldberger, Professor and Director of Toxicology at the University of Florida.

Goldberger said that the medical examiner's office in Miami is known for doing thorough work and that he's confident they and the independent lab covered as much ground as possible. But it's nearly impossible for toxicology testing to keep pace with new formulations of synthetic drugs.

"There are many of these synthetic drugs that we currently don't have the methodology to test on, and that is not the fault of the toxicology lab. The challenge today for the toxicology lab is to stay on top of these new chemicals and develop methodologies for them, but it's very difficult and very expensive." Goldberger said. "There is no one test or combination of tests that can detect every possible substance out there."

An addiction expert said she wouldn't rule out marijuana causing the agitation.

"It could have been the strain of marijuana that increases the dopamine in the brain, such as sativa," said Dr. Patricia Junquera, assistant professor at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

There are two strains of marijuana called sativa and indica. The sativa increases dopamine and gives you energy while decreasing pain threshold. Indica is a "sleepy high," she explained.

"People don't really know what the amount of either is in each little packet of marijuana," she explained. "And we can't differentiate between the two in the blood, much less in a dead person."

She also suggested that if Eugene had a mental disorder, "the marijuana could have increased even further the dopamine levels and aggravated the situation. So that can't be ruled out."

It's not clear what led to the May 26 attack on Ronald Poppo, a 65-year-old homeless man who remains hospitalized. Eugene's friends and family have said he was religious, not violent and that he didn't drink or do drugs harder than marijuana.

"There's no answer for it, not really," Eugene's younger brother, Marckenson Charles, said in an interview. "Anybody who knew him knows this wasn't the person we knew him to be. Whatever triggered him, there is no answer for this."

Surveillance video from a nearby building shows Eugene stripping Poppo and pummeling him, before appearing to hunch over and lie on top of him. The police officer who shot Eugene to death said he growled at the officer when he told him to stop.

Charles, Eugene's brother, said the family does not plan to pursue any legal action against the police for shooting Eugene.

"They used the force they felt was necessary, even if we don't agree with that,' he said.

He said that Eugene has been buried.

Shortly before the attack, a person driving on the MacArthur Causeway told a 911 dispatcher a "completely naked man" was on top of one of the light poles on the causeway and "acting like Tarzan." Still, police have said little about what may prompted Eugene to attack Poppo.

Poppo has undergone several surgeries and remains hospitalized. His left eye was removed, but doctors said earlier this month they were trying to find a way to restore vision in his right eye. He will need more surgeries before he can explore the options for reconstructing his face, doctors have said. A message left with the hospital was not immediately returned.

Poppo's family has said it had no contact with him for more than 30 years and thought he was dead.

Eugene's girlfriend, meanwhile, has said he never showed any signs of violence. Yovonka Bryant said she and Eugene often read the Bible and the Quran together, and often watched a religious television program in the mornings. She said she never saw Eugene drink and only saw him smoke marijuana once at a party.

A nutritious diet plan, which includes all vital nutritional vitamins and minerals, assists in reducing the hair thinning. Therefore, you should include things like green, leafy greens, raw oats, and whole grain cereals, eggs, dates, and raisins within your every day meals program. Because the hair is made from protein, you might be recommended to stay to protein-rich diet, these kinds of as calves liver, brewer?s yeast, and wheat germ.

Cut down alcohol consumption and in addition keep away from using it with your hair. Stay away from working with hair treatment solutions that incorporate alcohol. This is because alcohol will make your hair appear dry, brittle and liable to breakage. Specified tough chemicals these kinds of as lasting hair coloration and perms can influence the health and fitness and development of one?s hair. Hence, you must steer clear of coloring your hair a lot more than as soon as just about every 2-4 months.

Stay clear of Limited Braids- an exciting and customary explanation for hair loss is traction alopecia. People today who braid their hair incredibly tightly and in rows could potentially cause an excessive amount of pressure around the hair follicles. Eventually this could lead to vital and lasting hair loss. It is incredibly commonly noticed in African Us residents.

Verify Your Thyroid Function- minimal thyroid hormone can certainly lead to thinning hair. This is certainly far more typical in women than men. Other symptoms of hypothyroidism are excess weight attain, tiredness, dry pores and skin and inflammation. You must talk with the personal physician about checking your thyroid function, specially if you have any of those signs.

Continue to keep Track of your Blood Count- anemia or very low blood cell count can absolutely contribute to hairloss. Hair follicles are very metabolically lively and involve a lot of oxygen to function generally. It?s our red blood cells which carry that oxygen to our cells. Should you are anemic for almost any rationale, your hair density might experience. It?s a good notion to obtain your blood count checked by your individual medical doctor on an annual basis.

Use Rogaine (Minoxidil)- Each women and men who may have observed their hair thinning can gain from this. Rogaine is actually a topical treatment and that is available over-the-counter in drug stores. We?re not really absolutely sure how it performs, but when used 2 times on a daily basis it leads to a lot a lot less hairloss and a few re-growth of hair from the crown. Most men use the 5% foam and girls are likely to get started along with the 2% model. Minoxidil was at the time a higher blood stress medicine, but doctors started noticing that sufferers who took it formulated greater hair expansion.

Take into account Propecia (Finasteride)- This tip is for males only for the reason that this treatment is just encouraged for use by adult men. Propecia blocks the creation of the douleur hormone termed DHT, that?s the #1 culprit in resulting in douleur pattern baldness. This is a prescription treatment having an excellent protection profile. It in all probability stops about 85% from the thinning hair that will have occurred had you not taken it. On top of that, Propecia may well result in the brand new expansion of hair, particularly within the crown space on the head.

Check out the Laser Comb- Several wavelengths of laser mild are acknowledged to stimulate hair expansion. The FDA has approved several commercial laser applications and transportable laser combs for home use. These products could be utilized up to 3 occasions per week for 20 minutes and cause a mild but substantial grow in hair density. The one issue using this treatment solution is compliance, meaning which they only work for those who make sure to often use them.

Team maps the nuclear landscape

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

An Oak Ridge National Laboratory and University of Tennessee team has used the Department of Energy's Jaguar supercomputer to calculate the number of isotopes allowed by the laws of physics.

The team, led by Witek Nazarewicz, used a quantum approach known as density functional theory, applying it independently to six leading models of the nuclear interaction to determine that there are about 7,000 possible combinations of protons and neutrons allowed in bound nuclei with up to 120 protons (a hypothetical element called "unbinilium"). The team's results are presented in the June 28 issue of the journal Nature.

Most of these nuclei have not been observed experimentally.

"They are bound, meaning they do not spit out protons or neutrons," Nazarewicz explained. "But they are radioactive?they are short-lived, because there are other processes, such as beta decay, that can give rise to transmutations."

Of the total, about 3,000 have been seen in nature or produced in nuclear physics laboratories. The others are created in massive stars or in violent stellar explosions.

The computations allowed the team to identify the nuclear drip lines that mark the borders of nuclear existence. For each number of protons in a nucleus, there is a limit to how many neutrons are allowed. For example, a helium nucleus, which contains two protons, can hold no more than six neutrons. If another neutron is added to the nucleus, it will simply "drip" off. Likewise, there is a limit to the number of protons that can be added to a nucleus with a given number of neutrons. Placement of the drip lines for heavier elements is based on theoretical predictions extrapolated far from experimental data and is, therefore, uncertain.

The closer an isotope is to one of these drip lines the faster it decays into more stable forms. Particle accelerators have been unable to identify most of these exotic isotopes, especially those approaching the neutron drip line, because they are impossible to produce using current combinations of beams and targets. In fact, said Nazarewicz, all radioactive isotopes decay until they are transformed into one of 288 isotopes that form the so-called "valley of stability." These stable isotopes have half-lives longer than the expected lifetime of the solar system (about 4.6 billion years).

Earlier estimates of the nuclear landscape varied from as few as 5,000 to as many as 12,000 possible nuclei, Nazarewicz noted. He said his team's calculations were based on the microscopic forces that cause neutrons and protons to cluster into nuclei, adding that results from the six separate models were surprisingly consistent. By using several models, theorists were able for the first time to quantify uncertainties of predicted drip lines.

Because most of these nuclei are beyond our experimental reach, he explained, models must conform to known nuclei in a way that allows researchers to extrapolate results for exotic nuclei. Insight on the nature of most exotic nuclei must be extrapolated from models, he said.

"This is not a young field," Nazarewicz noted. "Over the years we've tried to improve the models of the nucleus to include more and more knowledge and insights. We are building a nuclear model based on the best theoretical input guided by the best experimental data."

The calculations themselves were massive, with each set of nuclei taking about two hours to calculate on the 244,256-processor Jaguar system. Nazarewicz noted that each of these runs needed to include about 250,000 possible nuclear configurations.

"Such calculation would not be possible two to three years ago," he said. "Jaguar has provided a unique opportunity for nuclear theory."

Nazarewicz noted that this work, supported by DOE's Office of Science -- which also supports the Jaguar supercomputer -- and by the Academy of Finland, has both existential value, helping us to get a better understanding of the evolution of the universe, and potential practical applications.

"We are not doing nuclear physics just to see whether you can get 7,000 species," he explained. "There are various nuclei that we can use to our advantage, eventually. Those we call 'designer nuclei.'"

Among these valuable nuclei are iron-45, a collection of 26 protons and 19 neutrons, which may help us understand superconductivity between protons; a pear-shaped radium-225, with 88 protons and 137 neutrons, which will help us understand why there is more matter than antimatter in the universe; and terbium-149, with 65 protons and 84 neutrons, which has shown an ability to attach to antibodies and irradiate cancer cells without affecting healthy cells.

"They have done experiments on mice and now humans in which they would look at the effectiveness of this treatment," he said. "This treatment is called an 'alpha knife.'

"Applications will certainly follow from the basic knowledge."

Chocolate and Blonde Macaroons ~ Raw Vegan Recipe - Yes

?24 pieces ~ $.58 each

ingredients
  • 1 cup almonds ($2.00)
  • 1 cups brazil nuts ($2.32)
  • 20 dates ($8.00)
  • 1 cup finely shredded coconut ($1.20)
  • 2 tbsp cocoa or cacao powder ($.30)
  • 1 tsp vanilla ($.20)

I have yet to come up with or run across a raw food recipe that's not fast and easy. These are no exception.

In a food processor with an S blade, process all ingredients, except the cocoa powder, until finely chopped and it all starts to clump together. This takes a minute or two.

Using a plastic rounded tablespoon or melon scooper, scoop out and press to make a half sphere. Use half the mixture to make regular coconut macaroons. Add the cocoa or cacao powder to the remaining mixture and process until well incorporated and then shape with the tablespoon or scooper.

The Splendid Table: How To Buy A Melon

Dear Lynne,

How do you buy a melon?

Gerry in Tacoma

Dear Gerry,

Trust your nose. If it smells quite sweet, it will be sweet. Check for ripeness by pressing the dime-sized round at the melon's end. Hard means it needs several days on the kitchen counter. If it has a bit of give, the melon should be ready. Never buy melons with soft spots, withered skins, musty aromas or no aroma at all. And if possible, buy organic ones for better flavor.

The food police side of my nature has to add that tricky bacteria and dirt can cling to the melon's skin. When you cut into it, your knife carries them onto the flesh of the fruit. So scrub melons with a vegetable brush and hot water running water before cutting into them. Always dry it well to avoid deterioration.

Having Sound Business Ethics ? Reasons To Embrace This Type Of

Reasons Why You Would Want To Embrace The Power And Benefits Of Sound Business Ethics

Integrating your marketing and advertising efforts, by embracing ethical practices, is something that you should consider doing. Although this may seem strange, you may not know your marketing audience as well as you think. Consumers in general will gravitate toward businesses that have an excellent reputation. Consumer loyalty will be stronger for those brands too. Perhaps you have no idea about the fact that all of this translates to growth and profits. So what you can do is actively promote your good and ethical business practices. Unless you educate consumers about this, they simply don?t understand. Digital TV On PC

There are many ways to act with unscrupulous or unethical behavior. Everyone has seen plenty of examples of unethical actions. However, there?s the softer approach which usually entails omission. Ignorance isn?t a valid argument, though, according to any legal professional. It is unlikely for a problem based on omission to arise if you care about the ethics of your business. The idea is to have enough care to make sure every angle is covered and that you aren?t tempted to use questionable situations, loopholes and so on and so forth. Truth About Six Pack Abs

If you want to have a successful business, then you need to have communication with your employees everyday. This is directly related to marketing principles that repeated exposure to a message influences its audience. Business operations can really take off if you continually convey a commitment to ethics on a regular basis. From adhering to management emphasizing quality actions and decisions on down is essential. You will create a very beneficial productive atmosphere within your company as long as management utilizes these ethical principles on a regular basis. Sonic Producer

Companies that tend to have legal issues are the ones that are usually the most unethical. Sometimes companies are forced into bankruptcy simply because they have been fined so much money that they cannot continue. This is one reason that you should make only ethical decisions.

When you make bad decisions, it is possible that your reputation may be tarnished. You may be presumed guilty, and even investigated because of what people think.

The more unethical but you are in your decision-making process, the more likely it is that you will become more unethical as you do business each and every year. A great example is to consider the ethical behavior that young children may have based upon the choices that they make.

Kids will keep doing something, even if it is bad, if they think they can get away with it. This will expand into other bad behaviors and poor decision-making as time goes on. Businesses will do the exact same thing, and they?ll do it until the parental influence of the courts intervene.

Sprinters' coach wants quick end to 100 debate

(AP) ? The last thing Bobby Kersee wants to do is burden his sprinters with controversy going into qualifying for the 200 meters on Thursday.

The longtime coach is trying to keep his two athletes focused on the race at hand, not one that's possibly waiting down the road.

So Kersee hinted that an answer just might come sooner rather than later on how to resolve a third-place tie between Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh, who finished in a dead heat in the 100-meter final at last weekend's Olympic trials.

The sprinters technically have until Sunday, when the trials end, to decide if they want a runoff ? a winner-take-all race to break the tie ? or a coin flip to determine who gets the last spot on the London-bound team in the event. One of them can simply bow out, too.

"It's a unique situation and we still have plenty of time to figure it out," Kersee told The Associated Press late Tuesday night. "Anytime you have a situation like that, you have to come up with different solutions. We're all talking, the athletes are talking, USA Track and Field is talking, in terms of coming up with a solution.

"It's just so the athletes can step on the track Thursday knowing they can focus on the 200 meters, and then deal with what we have to deal with after that."

This has turned into quite a hot topic.

Justin Gatlin would pick a runoff, reluctantly. So would Maurice Greene, who would do a coin toss as a last resort.

Everybody has an opinion ? even Olympic gold medalists ? about USA Track and Field's hastily unveiled options for breaking the third-place tie.

The organization has come under scrutiny for not having a plan in place for handling a tie, like they have in swimming, gymnastics and other sports.

"I honestly can't tell you why a protocol wasn't in place," USATF President Stephanie Hightower said. "No one ever thought through it. The likelihood of it happening didn't cross anybody's minds."

Surprising, since this has happened before ? to Hightower, no less.

At the 1984 Olympic trials, she finished in a three-way tie for second place in the hurdles. A grainy photo was used to break the tie and she was the odd person out, failing to earn a spot.

"There's no question that everyone was caught off guard," Hightower said. "At least this gives us the motivation to look at our bylaws and competition rules to see if there are any other gaping holes we need to shore up before the next big championship or Olympic trials."

That doesn't exactly help Felix and Tarmoh. They will compete in the 200 meters and after Saturday's final, if both make it, decide what to do next. The trials went on a two-day break Tuesday and will resume Thursday.

So far, the women have been pretty much mum on the matter. Their teammates have not.

"As an athlete, this worries me," said Gatlin, who won the 100 at trials, but will skip the 200. "Because no one knew about this loophole in the system.

"To run the 100-meter final at the Olympic trials and for it to be decided on a coin toss? It blows my mind."

So does a runoff.

"Your coach trains you for three rounds, for six rounds if you run the 100 and 200, and not an extra round. That's looked at as more of a sideshow," Gatlin said. "These ladies should have the respect for someone to say to them, 'Hey, you know what? There should've been a better (system) in place.'"

If left to Greene, an Olympic gold medalist in 2000, he would pick the runoff. Maybe.

"That's why you have a coach," he said. "If he said (coin flip), I would have to do that."

As it is, both are eligible to be selected to the Olympic 400-meter relay team. So are Carmelita Jeter, who won the 100, and runner-up Tianna Madison.

"This (the result of the 100) will not affect relay pool at all," women's Olympic coach Amy Deem said. "We'll still turn in the same four names and two alternates."

There has been some scuttle that perhaps Felix is waiting to see how she fares in her signature event, the 200, before reaching any decision. Should she earn a spot in the 200 and Tarmoh doesn't, Felix might just surrender the 100 spot to her training partner.

"It's noble, but I'm not giving anything up," Greene said. "I fight for everything. Nothing in life is given to you. You have to take everything you want and you have to work for it."

He has a solution ? a made-for-TV special. No other events, just these two women on the track.

"Tell NBC to give them $2 million and have a runoff," Greene said. "Then they'll do it for sure. If they have a runoff, do you realize how much money there's going to be?"

Maybe that would work if they weren't already coming off a grueling competition schedule. Kersee is concerned about the possibility of injury, since there's really no rest for either athlete.

The Olympics, after all, are on the line.

"You've come this far. I would gut it out," Gatlin said. "I would run. ... It would bring more excitement to track and field, to have a runoff."

In every other sport, there's some sort of carefully spelled-out tiebreaker in place.

In swimming, deadlocks are settled with swim-offs between the two opponents.

Gymnastics released its revamped tiebreak procedures so it doesn't have a repeat of the debacle in Beijing, where it practically took a NASA physicist to decipher the complicated formula that settled the gold medal on uneven bars. Now the execution mark will be the big deciding factor, and there is the possibility of sharing medals.

Odds of that happening are rare.

Still, it's a plan.

"You're always going to have your haters and your critics," Hightower said. "That goes with the territory. I think we've been responsible, responsive and we've been thoughtful. If this is a way to educate people about our sport, I'll take good with bad."

In a society that craves everything in an instant, the 100 is the ideal race.

Sprinters blaze down the track, lean at the finish line and look up at the giant scoreboard, where the times and places instantly pop up.

Even high-tech cameras couldn't break Saturday night's dead heat in a sport that's long relied on technology. Unlike baseball, which is slowly turning to video replay, track uses images to help sort things out.

But in this case, the image from the outside camera was inconclusive for determining the finish because both runners' arms obscured their torsos ? a key consideration in determining the finish.

The image from the inside camera, shot at 3,000 frames per second, was analyzed by timers and referees, who declared the tie.

"We might even look at where we put cameras in the future," Hightower said. "Now that we've had this incident, it will give us the motivation, for us to do our due diligence to look at things.

"I want to make sure that both (Felix and Tarmoh) walk away from this knowing that there was a fair process in place and they had input into it. They can walk away and feel like we haven't done anything to harm them and their ability long term."

Jabra BT2080 Bluetooth headset review

jabra bt2080

Using a Bluetooth headset – especially when you drive – should be standard practice. If you want the safety of hands free without breaking the bank, look at the Jabra BT2080.

More and more states are adopting laws that impose heavy fines for those who operate their phones while driving. While not getting caught and not having to pay a fine are certainly good motivators, the biggest one should be safety.  A distracted driver is a dangerous driver and a dangerous driver is someone we want to avoid – not someone we strive to become.

Syrian Army defections probably not decisive

By and large Bashar al-Assad's military is holding firm, in part because Alawites ? who dominate the officer corps ? believe they have little choice but to stick together or face annihilation.

The defection of five Syrian Army officers and some 30 soldiers to Turkey overnight is further evidence of the slow but steady toll on the manpower of the military loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.

But there is little evidence to suggest that the key fighting units in the Syrian Army have begun to witness significant defections that could shift the struggle decisively in favor of the Free Syrian Army and other armed opposition units.

A general, two colonels, and two majors, along with the 30 soldiers were part of a group of 200 Syrian soldiers who had split from the Army and dashed for the relative safety of the border with Turkey on Sunday night.

Turkey has hosted the leaders of the Free Syrian Army, the rebel force mainly comprised of defectors, since it emerged a year ago. The latest defectors were taken to Apaydin refugee camp in Hatay Province, some 2.5 miles from the border with Syria. The general, whose has not been identified, is the 13th to defect from the Army since the uprising against the Assad regime began in March 2011.

The Turkish authorities are hosting some 33,000 Syrian refugees, including FSA combatants, at several camps in the southeastern provinces of Hatay, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, and Kilis.

So far, the vast majority of the defectors are Sunnis, who form the bulk of the opposition against the Alawite-dominated Syrian regime. The Alawites, the sect the Assads belong to, are an obscure offshoot of Shiite Islam and represent about 12 percent of Syria's population (The Sunnis account for some 70 percent). Sunnis comprise around 60 percent of the Army but the Alawites dominate the officer corps and form the majority in the elite military units, such as the 4th Armored Division, which has been at the forefront of the regime's campaign to crush the rebellion.

Alawite defections have been extremely rare. In March, Capt. Saleh Habib Saleh, an Alawite Army officer, announced his defection and formed a small unit affiliated with the FSA known as the "Free Alawites." But his defection has proven exception rather than the rule.

As the confrontation between the Assad regime and the opposition has taken on an increasingly sectarian color, many Alawites, even those generally unsympathetic to the Syrian leadership, believe they have little choice but to stick together or face annihilation at the hands of a Sunni majority. However, if desertions begin to take hold among key Alawite-dominated army units, that could spell the beginning of the end of the Assad regime.

Motherhood and the Myth of Having it All | Toddler Times

6059789551 3e23fd2c98 Motherhood and the Myth of Having it AllSince I read Anne-Marie Slaughter?s piece Why Women Still Can?t Have it All last week I?ve been pondering the idea of what it means to truly ?have it all.?

I?m not new at this mommy gig. With a nine-year-old, an almost-five-year old, and a three-year-old, I?m in the trenches, so to speak, but I have a few years of parenting under my belt.

This adds up, roughly, to: 700 time outs, 4,000 spilled sippy cups, 20 car seat installations, and 1,456,792 poopy diapers.

Nevertheless, I know better than to say that I know what I?m doing.

We?ve been through a lot as a family. At least once a week I marvel at the fact that I?ve been able so far to keep the wheels on this bus moving forward and cling to my sanity at the same time. As a mom, I?ve worked full time and part time outside the home. For two years I was a stay-at-home mom with no job, and if you?d asked me back then I?d have told you it was going to stay that way. Then suddenly I found myself working again, very part-time teaching one night a week. And now I?m home full time but also working. Full time? Part time? I haven?t done the math.

All I know is this: in each of these arrangements I?ve failed to achieve it ?all.? If it exists, it has eluded me these past nine years. Here?s the thing, though. I?ve never gone out seeking ?it all.? It?s a myth, like the American Dream or the perfect bra or a brand of nonfat ranch dressing that still tastes good.

There is no such thing as ?it all.?

In Slaughter?s article she describes leaving her position at the State Department in search of that elusive work-family balance, her ?desire to be with my family and my conclusion that juggling high-level government work with the needs of two teenage boys was not possible.?

I?ve never been a high-level government official. I?ve never even been a low-level government official. Come to think of it, I?ve never been any kind of official (unless you count that time I got to hold the flag at the Girl Scouts regional meeting in 5th grade) but do have an understanding about what it means to work hard and do the best by your family at the same time. I don?t think this is an issue that we can isolate to the ranks of the power elite. I know women who work in insurance offices and hospitals and in elementary school libraries who struggle with these same issues.

Across the country there are clerks at Dollar Generals and cashiers at Krogers who fight the rough waters of work and home harmony and who go under every day.

We?re not doing women any favors by promoting this myth that it?s possible to ?have it all.? Can someone please tell me what that even means? My suspicion is that the headline of the article (which was a fascinating and well-written and thought-provoking read) was intended to bait women into another tussle in the Mommy Wars. The cover photo on the issue of The Atlantic in which the article appears depicts a toddler in a briefcase like a cast-off file folder, a minor inconvenience, or the working woman?s latest must-have accessory.

I?ve yet to meet a working mom who regards her child in that way.

I?d be happy if we could stop promoting myths like ?having it all? as a mom because it ends up making us all feel like failures if we don?t measure up. For me, though, for now, a forward-moving bus driven by a mother who?s clinging to her sanity is the best I can do.

I?m not in pursuit of ?having it all,? and maybe that?s why I?m happy with what I have.

Kevin Jennings: Duh

Sometimes you come across ideas that are definite "no-brainers." The latest example is www.OneMillionNewJobs.org.

As you may know, youth un- and under-employment is an epidemic in America. A third of high school graduates today are not in college or are unemployed -- the highest level since the Great Depression of the thirties. More than 1.3 million young people will graduate from college this year and find themselves unable to get a job. In my lifetime (and I am almost 50), it's never been a worse time to be young.

We face unprecedented challenges in America today: failing schools, crumbling infrastructure, inadequate health care, pervasive hunger (one in six Americans struggle with food insecurity)... the list goes on. Meanwhile literally millions of young people who could be contributing to society -- who have the skills and the drive and the ambition to make a difference -- are doing absolutely nothing.

The solution?

Duh.

Put these young people to work.

Today's youth want to help tackle these problems. Over the past two years around a million applications have been turned away from AmeriCorps, the federally-funded national service program that gives people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunities to get to work, like making their community safer, giving a child a second chance, or helping protect the environment by serving with local and national nonprofit groups. Today's young people want to get to work and make a difference. We just aren't giving them the opportunity to do so.

The One Million New Jobs campaign -- recently launched by ServiceNation's ServeNext Initiative and Our Time -- is asking our elected leaders to give those one million young people a chance to make a difference. The sad fact is that they already promised to employ a big chunk of those young people, and they aren't keeping that promise.

In 2009, the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act was passed with broad bipartisan congressional support and signed into law by President Obama, promising a massive expansion of service opportunities for this generation. By now AmeriCorps was supposed to have 140,000 annual members, well on its way to the eventual goal of 250,000. Instead AmeriCorps is stalled at 80,000 members, essentially the same number as before the Serve America Act was enacted, and the House of Representatives is trying for the third consecutive year to zero out the program altogether.

This is insane. When we confronted a similar crisis in the '30s, the federal government created a host of service programs (like the Civilian Conservation Corps) and put young people like my dad to work making America better. We should be doing the same thing now. Instead, while critical problems persist in our country, we're wasting the skills and energies of an entire generation of young people, a generation that wants to make a difference.

Let's give them that chance: Sign the petition now at www.OneMillionNewJobs.org.
