In a series of blunt posts on his Twitter feed, "Lost" star Dominic Monaghan is accusing his onetime co-star Matthew Fox of beating women.

Monaghan was in the midst of a fan Q&A on Twitter earlier this week when a user going by the screen name Becca wrote, "holla at matthew fox and tell him to get a twitter i beg of you." Monaghan's reply: "he beats women. No thanks."

Becca and Monaghan continued their conversation -- Becca wanted to know "what about all those good times you had together?" to which Monaghan replied, "how do you know we ever did? you don't know either of us. he beats women. not isolate incidents. often. not interested."

Monaghan went on to defend himself against those saying he was making false accusations.

TODAY.com reached out to Fox's manager and attorney for comment, but they have yet to respond.

Fox and Monaghan worked closely together on "Lost" from the series' beginning in 2004. While Monaghan's character Charlie was killed off in the season three finale in 2007, he returned for a number of episodes before the show ended its run in 2010. In a case of art apparently imitating life, Charlie and Fox's character Jack were often at odds with each other.

While "Lost" was on the air, personal conflicts between Monaghan and Fox, if there were any, were never publicized. That said, Fox is no stranger to off-screen controversy. In 2010, a stripper told In Touch magazine that the married actor had an affair with her (which he later denied); in 2011 Fox was charged with assault after allegedly punching a female bus driver in the breasts and groin; and just recently, Fox was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

The summit, being the first of its kind, highlighted a key theme pertaining to VA housing initiatives that support military members who are either transitioning their lives back into the United States or veterans who are struggling to buy or afford a home on a budget. Before the doors were opened to the public, breakfast with a handful of federal and local government officials took place for all corporate company sponsors and non-profit organizations to gather and work through solutions for the challenges being faced with the VA Home Loan Process.

The VA Guaranteed Loan is a VA backed mortgage that allows eligible veterans and active duty military service members the dream of owning a home using their VA Home Loan Benefits. The overall goal of the housing summit was to implement a proactive approach to making the VA loan processes more transparent, easier to understand, and mainly, to put military service members into homes at a faster than the current pace.

Following the excitement and set up, the Housing Summit?s grand opening began at 10AM, welcoming veterans and military from all walks of life.

This summit was open to the general public but targeted veterans and military members of all branches and components. There were education classes on a wide range of VA benefits to include those provided directly by the State of Texas. Topics presented for Veterans to take advantage of during the hourly classes included, VA Home Loan tips over how to utilize their benefits to achieve a maximum result in savings based on their current (or potential) financial responsibilities. Other topics discussed in the classes for veterans included tricks of the trade provided by professionals in the industry of home loan financing regarding credit scores, financial aid, mortgage calculations for VA Funding Fee, and how certain details of an individual?s budget play a role in how the interest rates are finalized with the lender and VA. Officials from the Veterans Land Board were on hand to provide guidance to veterans with the goal of purchasing land to build on.

We are here to provide education and resources for veterans and their families, said Jim Bob Mickler, Marketing Team Manager of Veterans Land Board. Classes were held hourly throughout the day for eligible military members as well as mortgage lenders over ways they can take advantage of the VA guarantee loan, purchase land directly from the state, and manage finances accordingly in order to properly secure a VA mortgage approval. Members who attended the housing classes were given the opportunity to learn about VA Home Loan Benefits and VA laws currently in effect based on the guidelines set by the Department of Veteran Affairs.

One special tidbit that stood out in the crowd of banking and lending professionals who know the best tricks of the trade in getting the best interest rates and financial savings. According to Jason Noble, Residential Mortgage Loan Originator and Managing Director from Security America Mortgage, Inc., the Advantages of Using a VA Loan to finance a mortgage in Texas include: lower interest rates, no down payment on a home, free home inspections, free insurance with no requirements of needing homeowners insurance, easier credit requirements on higher mortgage amounts, to name a few.

Also, in order to achieve the American dream of owning a home, Noble pointed out the need for veterans to be better informed with regard to finding VA approved lenders (like his company), and the need for lending companies as well as government officials in charge of the VA financial processes with the VA guarantees to take on a more proactive role in owning the responsibility of being transparent the Veteran and Military public about what they are entitled to.

Noble provided pertinent information to John Trasvina, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of the Office For Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, who further discussed specifics during his briefing, saying that, Thanks to Jason, weve received some info pertaining to specific VA Lending processes that we in Washington are going to take action on in order to help place Veterans into homes more efficiently than our current process in place.

According to the AUSA, approximately six thousand people attended the VA housing event throughout the day.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) ? A day after apologizing for the first time, a former Rutgers University student convicted of using a webcam to spy on his gay roommate gave up his right to remain free on Wednesday while New Jersey prosecutors appeal his 30-day jail sentence.

Dharun Ravi appeared in state court to formally put on the record his decision to report to jail Thursday and waive his right not to be punished twice for the same crime.

His lawyer, Joseph Benedict, said Ravi intends to begin doing community service when he's out of jail, and will start paying fines on Aug. 1. His sentence includes 300 hours of community service and more than $11,000 in court assessments ? $10,000 of it to support groups that assist victims of bias crimes.

Ravi spoke in court only to give brief replies to questions from the judge and his lawyer and did not amplify the apology he gave a day earlier in a two-paragraph statement sent to reporters.

The state's appeal of Superior Court Judge Glenn Berman's sentence as too lenient had automatically stayed the sentence. Prosecutors were seeking to have Ravi sent to state prison rather than county jail ? though not necessarily the 10-year maximum sentence Ravi faced for bias intimidation. Middlesex County First Assistant Prosecutor Julia McClure said in court Wednesday that she thought a five-year sentence would be appropriate, but said she understands a judge could rightfully order a shorter sentence.

But Ravi announced Tuesday he had decided to start his jail term despite the appeal. He also issued his first public apology while continuing to deny his actions were motivated by hate or bigotry.

Ravi was convicted in March of bias intimidation, invasion of privacy and other crimes for the watching a brief live webstream of roommate Tyler Clementi kissing another man in September 2010. Clementi threw himself from New York City's George Washington Bridge days later after learning of the webcam.

Gay rights advocates held up Clementi an example of the consequences of bullying. Ravi's supporters say Ravi was not a bully at all, but a college student who made a bad decision ? and that the charges were so serious only because of Clementi's suicide ? even though Ravi was not charged with his death.

In his apology issued through a lawyer on Tuesday, Ravi, 20, described his actions as "thoughtless, insensitive, immature, stupid and childish."

He said getting his jail term out of the way is "the only way I can go on with my life."

Clementi's parents, who had attended all of Ravi's previous court hearings, were not present Wednesday.

Because Ravi's sentence is less than a year, it decreases the chances that federal immigration authorities will seek to have him deported to India, where he was born and remains a citizen.

Even though he is heading to jail, Ravi is moving ahead with an appeal of his conviction, arguing that he is innocent.

In most cases, New Jersey county jail inmates with 30-day sentences automatically have them reduced by 10 days for good behavior. A warden at Middlesex County Jail was not immedialey available Wednesday to say whether that would apply to Ravi.

Also on Wednesday, Berman went into more depth on why he thought a 30-day jail sentence was served the interest of justice. "I know people disagree," he said. "All you've got to do is look at my in-box."

Berman said he wanted to explain his sentence further in part to help build a record for appeals court judges to use.

Berman reiterated something he said last week when he sentenced Ravi: Even though bias intimidation is usually referred to as a hate-crime, he does not believe that title fits this case. "I don't defend his actions against Tyler Clementi, nor does he," Berman said. "I don't think it was motivated by hatred, and I'll stand on that."

That, he said, is one reason, a longer sentence would be inappropriate.

"I can't find it in me to remand him to state prison that houses people convicted of offenses such as murder, armed robbery and rape," Berman said. "I don't believe that fits this case. I believe he has to be punished and he will be."

Berman said he believed the jail sentence would deter others from acting as Ravi did.

He also said he saw the $10,000 he ordered Ravi to pay to a group for bias-crime victims as a major part of the punishment.

In his new book, Peeking at Peak Oil ( Springer, 2012) physicist Kjell Aleklett explores the science and consequences behind the sobering reality that the world's oil production is entering terminal decline with no satisfactory alternatives.

Peeking at Peak Oil explains how oil is formed, discovered and "produced," using science to reveal the errors and deceit of public and private organizations with a vested interest in promoting business as usual. Dawn is a demo tape released in 1990 by Pan.Thy.Monium, one of Dan Swano's early project, even preceding Edge Of Sanity's debut. Usually i don't go for this stuff at all, but because of my big appreciation for this fantastic band, i wanted to check out their early recordings as well. After listening to their 1991 EP recording which wasn't to my liking, i approached this with no expectation at all, and i must say i'm positively surprised. First of all the sound quality is very good for an unknown swedish brutal death metal demo tape, drums are well recorded and mixed, guitars are heavy and loud and the keys are noticable. Overall pretty good.

So what do we have here...4 songs, three of the songs will be rerecorded and released later, two in their debut and one in their second album. The music here shows the band's brutal death metal side definitely not straight forward but with some interesting ideas mixed together. Tom Nouga which was responsible for the soloing guitar and the saxophone in their albums hasn't joined the band just yet, so this is less experimental but still does show the band has some original ideas. The music is doomy and slow but also fast and brutal at times, the songs are short but are not stuck on a main heavy riff, there are some changes in riffs and in tempo, i wouldn't go far and call it progressive but still interesting and well played, this is one of the most exceptional demos out there.

Although this was meant for the underground swedish scene, it shows the band's potential for a different kind of songwriting, this of course turned to be one of the best and most experimental bands out there. 3 stars is adequate for this genre.

The whole of UK will be enjoying an extended four day weekend to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen?s coronation took place on 2nd June 1953 (she came to throne in February of the previous year). Sixty years on the throne deserve a recognition, many celebrations are planned including street parties all around the country. And of course we celebrate best with some great food (and drink) in hand.

Probably the most famous dish, from the two Coronation Banquets in 1953, is the Coronation Chicken. The recipe was created by Constance Spry and Rosemary Huyme. Constance suggested to make curried creamy chicken and Rosemary (the chef) executed the idea. For months now Coronation Chicken inspired dishes have been on the shelves of supermarkets, you can choose from the traditional chicken, veggie rice version or a Coronation dip. There even is a coronation ice-cream in an ice-cream shop in London.

I felt inspired and created my own plant based version of the famous dish. As in the original version I used a curry powder. When I made curries I blend my own spices but the generic curry powder taste is what makes this recipe traditional as that is what they would use in 1953. Just make sure you use a good quality one, I get mine in an Asian shop. You can also use a good curry paste.

The original version is mayo heavy and I didn?t want to just open a jar and replace the regular mayo with a vegan one. Therefore a tofu/cashew dressing was born, the quantities given make more than you will need but it tastes great and you will find other uses (great with new potatoes). The salad ingredients can be easily doubled to make enough to feed a crowd, it makes a great potluck dish.

Here is to the Queen, who has kept going with seemingly boundless energy through all the ups and downs in the 60 years of her rule. I will be raising a glass of Pimm?s to her health.

CORONATION CHICKPEA SALAD

.

Salad:

1/3 cup (60g) wild rice

1/2 Tbs rapeseed/canola or olive oil

1 small to medium red onion, finely diced

2 tsp mild curry powder

1 Tbs tomato puree

1 tin of chickpeas, drained

2 Tbs water

2 Tbs raisins

6 dried apricots, cut into roughly raisin size

4 spring onions, white part only, finely sliced

handful of toasted flaked almonds

handful of fresh coriander chopped

Dressing:

1/2 cup (60ml) water

1/2 cup cashew nuts

1/2 pack of silken tofu (about 170g ? 6oz)

1 heaped Tbs mango chutney

good pinch of saffron

2 Tbs lemon juice

pinch of salt

Method:

First cook the rice in 1 and 1/2 cups of water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes. Drain and cool down. Set aside.

In a frying pan heat the oil, gently saute the onion until tender but do not brown, about 10 minutes.

Add the curry powder and cook for 30 seconds. Next add the tomato puree. Stir together.

Add the chickpeas and 2 Tbs of water to the frying pan. Season with salt. Cook gently until the water is evaporated and the chickpeas are coated with thick curry paste. Let the chickpeas cool down.

When the rice and chickpeas have cooled down place them into a bowl and add the rest of the salad ingredients.

To make the dressing blend all the ingredients in a blender till smooth. Pour some of the dressing over the salad, mix well. The salad should be very creamy. You can overdo the dressing a bit, it thickens in the fridge. Chill.

Decorate with some almonds and coriander. Enjoy!

MONTREAL (AP) ? Quebec's generous social services date back to sweeping reforms in the 1960s, a period of intense nationalism. Yet many Quebecers look back at the "Quiet Revolution" with regret over one unfulfilled promise: free higher education.

That sentiment is fueling Canada's most sustained student demonstrations ever. It has been anything but quiet.

Some 150,000 students in more than a dozen Quebec colleges and universities have been on strike since February to protest the provincial government's plan to raise tuition fees. Street protests in Montreal have ended in clashes with police and mass arrests.

A strict new law designed to stop the demonstrations has only broadened the movement to include separatists and Occupy protesters, and triggered a wider debate over public freedoms. The students are threatening to persevere through the summer, just when the city traditionally awakens from its dark and frigid winter for jazz and comedy festivals that draw in millions of dollars in tourist revenue.

The French-speaking province's average undergraduate tuition ? $2,519 a year ? is the lowest in Canada, and the proposed hike? $254 per year over seven years ? is tiny by U.S. standards. But opponents consider the raise an affront to the philosophy of the 1960s reforms that set Quebec apart not only from its U.S. neighbor but from the rest of Canada.

"The whole consensus around education was built around the Quiet Revolution," said Pierre Martin, a political science professor at the Universite de Montreal. "That consensus would tend toward a tuition-free model in the future. That was a promise."

As a result, he said, Quebecers don't compare their tuition rates to those in the U.S. or English-speaking Canada, but to those in European countries where higher education is free.

Quebec Premier Jean Charest, who has vowed to shake up the debt-ridden province's finances since he was elected nearly a decade ago, has refused to cave.

More than 2,500 students have been arrested since the demonstrations began more than 100 days ago, including nearly 700 this past Wednesday alone. The total is five times the arrests during a period in the 1970s when soldiers were deployed to the streets in Quebec because of a spate of terrorism by a group demanding independence from Canada.

The tuition hike is part of a broader effort to shift Quebec's fiscal burden away from taxpayers ? the province has some of the steepest personal income taxes in North America and the highest per-capita debt in Canada? and onto the shoulders of each person who uses a service.

"Every citizen has to do their part," Quebec Finance Minister Raymond Bachand told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "This is the 21st century."

Bachand said the students want more money in their pocket to the detriment of others. He noted that the government has expanded student grants so that middle and lower income students can more easily afford the increase.

"We're talking about 50 cents a day so basically it's moved from a question of tuition fees to a question of a social movement like you've seen in other parts of the world," Bachand said. "We're not used to this as Canadians. We're used to sitting down, disagreeing, negotiating and coming to an agreement."

In an effort to restore peace, Charest's government passed emergency legislation on May 18 restricting protests and closing striking campuses until August. The law requires that police be informed eight hours before a protest begins, including details on the route of any demonstration of 50 or more people. It also prohibits demonstrations within 50 meters (165 feet) of a college and declares that anyone who incites or helps another person break the new protest regulations can be fined.?

The new law has "changed the discourse now and introduced a new element into the debate, and that is the question of rights," said Bruce Hicks, a political scientist at Concordia University. The students have challenged the law in court.

Provincial Public Safety Minister Robert Dutil said Quebec cities are simply joining others that already have tough rules for organizing protests, including Los Angeles and New York.

"Law 78" has inspired a particularly cacophonous form of protest: from 8 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., people around Quebec emerge onto sidewalks and balconies to bang pots and pans.

Anne Claude, a 23-year-old computer student banging pots with a friend one evening in the heart of Montreal's Latin Quarter, said the law has only increased her resolve to be heard.

"The new law limits our ability to demonstrate," Claude shouted over the noise.

Across the street, pizza parlor owner Naeem Ahmed shook his head when he recalled the sight of an open fire hydrant gushing water into his business and a bonfire lit dangerously close by.

Ahmed, 37, has had a front row seat to more than 30 straight nights of protests. Confrontations between helmeted police and students have scared customers away. Students sometimes seek shelter in his establishment to escape police sweeps.

"For businesses it has been really, really horrible," Ahmed said, taking a break with some of his employees to look at cellphone footage of a recent protest. One of his employees joined the pot-bangers, clanging two trash lids together.

"Police come and ask everybody to leave," he said.

Still, he sympathizes with the students. "If you go to any country, when the students hit the streets, you have to listen to them," he said. "When they come out you have to accept it."

The student groups and the government have announced their intention to return to negotiations in the next days, with Quebec Education Minister Michelle Courchesne saying she expects a "very, very important" session following positive discussions over the phone.

But the two sides seem far apart. Student leader Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois wants to propose a long-term plan that would essentially fulfill the promise of the Quiet Revolution: scrapping university tuition fees altogether within five years and funding that by increasing taxes on financial institutions.

That is the opposite of what the government wants.

"Sacred cows only exist in India," the finance minister has repeatedly said.
